Matthew Landau is a 57 year-old Practical Method Taiji practitioner residing in Westport, CT in the United States. He is married with grown children and has worked in Banking, Wall Street and Private Equity for the past 35 years. His business emphasis is in commercial real estate debt and equity in public and private markets where he has completed hundreds of transactions and a few billion dollars of deals.
He began studying Practical Method in 2003 looking for a more complete martial system that emphasized health, body awareness and internal power. Since his teenage years, he has studied other martial arts and respects them all. However, none of them come close to the richness, depth, simplicity and sophistication of the Practical Method.
He has traveled to China frequently for business and pleasure and has spent time training at Daqingshan. Notably, he was in Jinan in 2004 for the ceremony appointing Master Chen Zhonghua the Practical Method International Standard Bearer. In 2007, in Beijing, he attended the First International Symposium of Hunyuan Tai Chi with Grandmaster Feng Zhi Zhiang. In 2013, in Wulian, he attended the 1st Daqingshan International Taijiquan Competition hosted by Master Chen Zhonghua.
Practical Method Taiji training shapes the human body to its most powerful and natural state. The foundation drills, form and push hands practiced properly over time creates a unique structure that demonstrates ying-yang separation and “peng” energy. No other martial art or sport creates this kind of structural alignment, power and sensitivity. One learns how to be still, “not move” and only rotate deliberately activated body joints. Internal contraction and expansion of fascia tissue, tendons and ligaments also are emphasized above big muscle groups. The positive effect on one’s health is incredible; the physical and psychological impacts on opponents are profound.
